About the position

The Geologist/Hydrologist I position at the State of South Carolina involves working within the Mining and Reclamation Section of the Bureau of Land and Waste Management. The role focuses on administering the permitting inspections of mining operations, ensuring compliance with state regulations, and providing technical assistance to the mining industry. This position is essential for protecting the environment and supporting sustainable mining practices in South Carolina.

Responsibilities

  • Perform technical review on applications for mine operating permits and reclamation plans to ensure consistency with the Mining Act & Regulations.
  • Conduct inspections and necessary follow-ups on all mining operations in assigned area to ensure compliance with the S.C. Mining Act & Regulations, the mine operating permit, and the approved reclamation plan.
  • Provide technical assistance to the mining industry on the mining and reclamation plans.
  • Assist regulatory agencies, consultants, public officials, mining operators, and the general public regarding mining and reclamation requirements.
  • Conduct conferences and technical meetings with industry officials and consultants.
  • Work with other regulatory agencies, non-governmental organizations, and the general public through meetings, hearings, written correspondence, site visits, and verbal communications regarding technical review of applications for mine operating permits.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • A bachelor's degree in geology, hydrology, hydrogeology, or geological engineering.
  • Knowledge of personal computers, particularly Word and Excel.
  • Ability to write technical reports and permits.
  • Ability to work closely with permittees, professional consultants, elected officials, the general public, and others as needed.
  • Ability to perform beginner to journey level professional geology or hydrology work under general to limited supervision.
  • Ability to climb steep slopes, traverse uneven terrain, and participate in site visits in fair and inclement weather.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.
  • Valid driver's license and a 10-year driving record that complies with State and Agency Fleet guidelines.
