About the position

The Geologist position at the Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment is a vital role focused on analyzing and interpreting geological data to support the responsible management of natural resources and environmental protection. The successful candidate will be responsible for populating and maintaining geological databases, collaborating with agency staff to produce maps and publications, and engaging in outreach activities that benefit both the public and private sectors. This position operates under the governance of state and federal laws, as well as agency policies, ensuring compliance and adherence to regulatory standards. In this role, the Geologist will plan and prepare geological maps, cross-sections, charts, technical reports, and publications that pertain to geologic resources. This involves utilizing results from fieldwork, laboratory analyses, and literature research. The Geologist will analyze and interpret geological, geochemical, and geophysical information sourced from survey data, well logs, boreholes, aerial photographs, and geological maps. A critical aspect of the job includes assessing groundwater and surface water supply sources and characteristics, providing essential information to state and federal agencies, as well as to the citizens of Arkansas. The Geologist will also identify geologic risks and offer advice on mitigating geologic damage from environmental or geohazards. This includes planning and conducting geological, geochemical, geohazards, and geophysical field studies and surveys, as well as sample collection and drilling/testing programs to gather data for research and application. Additionally, the role involves conducting geological studies to inform regional development, site selection, and public works projects, as well as locating and identifying potential resources such as natural gas, oil, coal, minerals, aggregates, and groundwater using various geological research tools. Overall, the Geologist will perform other duties as assigned, contributing to the mission of the Arkansas Department of Energy and Environment to provide effective and efficient energy and environmental solutions informed by science.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze and interpret geological data from various sources.
  • Populate and maintain geological databases.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in geology or a related field.
  • Two years of experience in geology or a related field.
  • Knowledge of geology theories and practices.
  • Knowledge of methods for conducting petroleum, mineral, and water surveys.
  • Proficiency in GIS and geology software.
  • Ability to conduct geological investigations and analyses.
  • Ability to write technical reports and make oral presentations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Nice-to-haves

  • Related coursework and experience in hydrogeology, groundwater contaminant fate and transport, and groundwater hydraulics.
  • Experience in hydrogeologic field investigations and groundwater sampling.
  • Experience in environmental fields pertaining to Solid Waste.
  • HAZWOPER 40-hour and current 8-hour training certification.
  • Arkansas Registered Professional Geologist.
