About the position

The George Kaiser Family Foundation (GKFF) is seeking a Controller to oversee all aspects of financial reporting and accounting operations for the organization. GKFF is a charitable organization dedicated to providing equal opportunities for young children in Tulsa, Oklahoma, through investments in early childhood education, community health, social services, and civic enhancement. The Controller will play a crucial role in managing financial reporting for a nonprofit foundation with approximately $5 billion in Assets Under Management (AUM). This position will involve coordinating with the financial accounting manager to ensure timely monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reporting that meets the needs of management, the board, and third parties. In addition to financial reporting, the Controller will manage relationships with external audit engagement teams, ensuring audits are completed on time and supporting external tax compliance teams with necessary information requests and data analysis. The role will also involve collaborating with the Director of Business Analytics to monitor budget-to-actual performance and prepare enterprise-level financial analyses. The Controller will coordinate information flow, bookkeeping, tax, and audit work for multiple program operations, including compliance or regulatory reporting for various entities and tax credit projects. The Controller will oversee a growing accounting team, ensuring adherence to strong internal controls and managing bookkeeping, payment processing, and financial reporting for GKFF's various operating segments and wholly-owned subsidiary entities. This position will also play a central role in the implementation of a new accounting system scheduled for a January 2025 go-live. The Controller will be responsible for designing, implementing, and monitoring internal controls and processes for GKFF and its operating segments, while also supervising the work and contributing to the professional development of multiple direct reports and team members. The ideal candidate will promote a culture of compliance, transparency, and timely communication in a quickly growing, entrepreneurial organization.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for all aspects of financial reporting for the nonprofit foundation.
  • Manage relationships with external audit engagement teams and ensure timely completion of audits.
  • Support external tax compliance teams with information requests and data analysis.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Business Analytics to monitor budget-to-actual performance.
  • Coordinate information flow, bookkeeping, tax, and audit work for multiple program operations.
  • Support GKFF investment team in creating portfolio performance reports and Mark-to-Market accounting.
  • Manage the accounting team and ensure adherence to strong internal controls.
  • Oversee bookkeeping, payment processing, and financial reporting for various operating segments.
  • Communicate operational and financial information between program teams and external service providers.
  • Play a central role in the implementation of a new accounting system.
  • Research and coordinate with HR on payroll and unique HR-related accounting issues.
  • Regularly partner with the Tulsa Community Foundation accounting and program team.
  • Design, implement, and monitor internal controls and processes for GKFF.
  • Supervise the work and contribute to the professional development of team members.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with a major in Accounting or Finance or related field, or equivalent experience.
  • CPA certification required.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience managing an accounting team.
  • Understanding of U.S. GAAP is essential.
  • Experience working with non-profit organizations, investment services, or family offices preferred.
  • Experience in accounting for revenue, inventory, and cost of goods sold preferred.
  • Public accounting, auditing, or tax compliance experience is a plus.
  • Experience in Federal and State government grant compliance reporting is a plus.
