About the position

The Senior Geotechnical Engineer will be a key member of Barr Engineering's innovative geotechnical engineering team, focusing on dam-related projects. This part-time role involves managing geotechnical projects from concept to construction, maintaining client relationships, and providing mentorship to junior engineers. The position requires extensive experience in dam engineering and risk assessments, along with a strong understanding of civil engineering standards and practices.

Responsibilities

  • Managing geotechnical projects from concept to construction
  • Maintaining and developing client relationships
  • Providing support through training/mentorship for geotechnical engineers
  • Preparing proposals and cost estimates for geotechnical investigations
  • Interpreting and analyzing geotechnical data to establish engineering properties of materials and foundation recommendations
  • Completing geotechnical engineering analyses including seepage, slope stability, bearing capacity, settlement, and rotational stiffness
  • Preparing reports
  • Assisting with leading and supporting the growth of the dam practice area
  • Traveling for periodic out-of-town assignments

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering
  • 15 years of relevant work experience with dam engineering and risk assessments
  • Professional Engineer (PE) certification or ability to obtain certification within 1 year
  • Broad knowledge of and experience with civil engineering and design codes, standards, guidelines, and best practices for complex dam evaluation, design, and construction projects
  • Experience with established dam safety programs including FERC Part 12 dam safety program requirements
  • Facilitation experience with PFMAs/failure modes and effects analyses (FMEAs)
  • Experience performing probability and consequence analysis for qualitative risk assessments
  • Demonstrated understanding of the consulting profession
  • Proven experience collaborating and maintaining relationships across offices
  • Willingness to travel to support project needs
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment weighing 30 pounds or more
  • Computer skills, including word processing and spreadsheet creation
  • Strong oral and written communication skills
  • Legal authorization to work in the United States without the need for sponsorship
  • Valid driver's license and acceptable driving record

Nice-to-haves

  • Graduate degree in civil or geotechnical engineering with additional coursework or research related to geotechnical or dam engineering
  • 20+ years of analysis and design experience
