About the position

The GIS Analyst 1 (Cartographer 1) position at the Department of Archaeology & Historic Preservation (DAHP) is a full-time, permanent role based in Olympia, WA, with flexible/hybrid remote employment options. The primary responsibility of this role is to support the GIS program, which is essential for the agency to fulfill its state and federal obligations regarding the recordation and protection of Washington's cultural resources. The position requires at least one day in-office work per week due to technical limitations associated with the department's IT solutions. The office hours are from 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday, with some flexibility in start times. In this role, you will be tasked with digitizing locational information into ArcGIS SDE databases and capturing related data into Microsoft Access databases and WISAARD. This includes working with various types of data such as traditional cultural properties, National Register of Historic Places data, cemetery sites, and archaeological sites. You will collaborate closely with the GIS Program Manager to ensure that all GIS initiatives align with DAHP policies and are executed efficiently and accurately. Your duties will involve deriving and calculating technical geographic or mapping information, producing maps or map/data products, and evaluating source information to select the most accurate data for digitization. You will also be responsible for editing data layers within agency GIS mapping applications and ensuring the accuracy and integrity of the data collected. Responsibilities

  • Derives, calculates, or determines technical geographic or mapping information, encodes and enters into DAHP's geographic information system.
  • Uses standard technical processes to produce maps or map/data products.
  • Receives instruction and supervision from higher level cartographic professionals.
  • Evaluates source information and source maps to select the most accurate information to digitize locations into DAHP's geographic information system.
  • Uses Government Land Office records, U.S.G.S. Quadrangle Maps, current land survey records, photo maps and other sources to perform archaeological and historic site recordation.
  • Edits data layers within agency GIS mapping applications and enters resource attribute information into SQL databases through WISAARD and Microsoft Access front ends for various data types.
  • Creates new data layers from a variety of sources using processes and procedures prescribed by standard operating procedures.
  • Produces map/data products assigned when standard procedures exist such as planimetric and topographic maps; may use a variety of system layers.
  • Draws maps using conventional cartographic drafting, calculations, and information collection and evaluation methods; uses GIS technology to collect and compile data for visual representation of geographic areas.
  • Operates and maintains cartographic and research equipment.
  • Ensures the accuracy and integrity of data collected.
  • Researches new geospatial technology.

Requirements

  • A two-year degree in cartography, geography, photogrammetry, geographic information systems, computer sciences, remote sensing, land survey, civil engineering, natural resources or closely related field that includes at least one course in cartography and one course in computer sciences or geographic information systems.
  • Any combination of relevant undergraduate college education and full-time experience in technical cartographic or geographic information systems production that totals two years.
  • Knowledge of technical cartography including land survey, map projections and standards, geography, land uses.
  • Knowledge of digitizing and editing methods and techniques for geographic information, geometry, trigonometry and arithmetic calculation and problem resolution.
  • Ability to evaluate and resolve differences between a variety of technical information sources, encode and enter geographic information into a geographic information system, follow standard procedures and resolve technical differences to produce map/data products.

Nice-to-haves

  • A bachelor's degree in cartography, geography, photogrammetry, geographic information systems, computer sciences, remote sensing, land survey, civil engineering, natural resources, or closely related field that includes at least one course in cartography and one course in computer sciences or geographic information systems.
  • GISP certification or Esri Technical Certification.
  • Knowledge of archaeology and historic preservation laws and understanding of the regulatory consultation workflow.
