About the position

The GIS Analyst/Cartographer position at the University of South Carolina focuses on enhancing the GIS strategy and platform within health policy research. The role involves utilizing GIS software and tools to create maps and visual products, conducting spatial analyses, and collaborating with senior GIS staff to develop standardized mapping templates. The position requires a blend of technical skills in GIS and programming, along with a strong understanding of health-related datasets and public health concepts.

Responsibilities

  • Analyze all aspects of Medicaid and other datasets to model relationships with social determinants of health.
  • Leverage knowledge and expertise for research products and deliverables as well as web development efforts.
  • Deliver mapping solutions by defining user requirements, workflow, and collaborating with various project teams.
  • Develop innovative cartography and infographics.
  • Geocode and create datasets for mapping.
  • Develop strong relationships with the IFS team to understand the content and facilitate the use of research and GIS to positively impact our work.
  • Meet deadlines for contracts and grant deliverables.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree and no prior work experience, which may be substituted by equivalent combination of certification, training, education, and/or experience.
  • Demonstrable experience with cartography and telling a story with maps, charts, and tables.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to proofread and correct own work and work of others with keen attention to detail.
  • High-level analytical and problem-solving skills and capacity for strategic thinking.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's degree
  • Experience with Esri GIS tools including ArcPro
  • 2+ years of health GIS experience; understanding of health and place concepts, using automation and scripting workflows.
  • Knowledge of programming languages (e.g., python, SQL, SAS)
  • Experience with spatial statistical tools and mapping output
  • Knowledge of Medicaid or other healthcare claims
  • Knowledge of web GIS (e.g., ArcGIS Online); data as a service, web application configuration, cloud infrastructure and architecture
  • Knowledge of public health concepts and methods.
  • Experience working with health-related datasets (Medicaid/Medicare, hospitalization data, cancer data, etc.) and mapping health data.
