About the position

The GIS Analyst I position at the County of Monterey's Information Technology Department is designed for individuals skilled in spatial technologies and geodatabase administration. This role supports the County's ArcGIS Enterprise Portal and ArcGIS Online users, contributing to the digital transformation and technology innovation within the department. The successful candidate will engage in exploratory data analysis, develop scripts and algorithms, and create models to address specific problems, all while working collaboratively in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform exploratory data analysis and visualize information using tools like ArcGIS, R, and Excel.
  • Conduct technical research and project development related to GIS and data analysis problems.
  • Prepare and maintain technical documentation and organized records.
  • Recommend and develop processes and tools to automate data processing and analyses.
  • Participate in educational and professional development programs.
  • Develop testing frameworks and assess database and model quality and performance.
  • Create websites and services for model components and data exploration tools.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Geography, or a related field from an accredited university; or four years of technical engineering, drafting, or cartographic experience; or two years of experience equivalent to an IT Support Specialist in the County of Monterey.
  • Knowledge of GIS database design principles and techniques.
  • Familiarity with spatial and geographic data sources and GIS software operations.
  • Ability to gather, analyze, and evaluate technical information and data sources.
  • Skill in writing clear and concise GIS systems specifications and technical documentation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Python scripting languages.
  • Knowledge of third-party GIS software and utilities.
  • Understanding of relational databases and County geographical databases.
