About the position

WSP USA hosts hundreds of internships across the United States to gain hands-on, meaningful work experience to enhance their education and professional aptitude. Our interns gain exposure to real projects while working side by side with senior staff. Through our Developing Professionals Network, interns gain mentorship, networking opportunities and lifelong career connections. The candidate selected for this internship position will have the opportunity to perform stormwater environmental regulatory compliance related modeling and analysis, drainage and survey area mapping, and perform field surveys and monitoring in support of these efforts. Our Earth and Environment Team is seeking a Full-Time GIS Analyst Intern - Summer 2025 to work out of our San Diego, CA office. This temporary position is seeking individuals currently enrolled in an Undergraduate or Graduate degree program. This internship will be part of the WSP Summer Internship Program. As a summer intern, you have the opportunity to participate in our 12-week program scheduled to start on May 19th, 2025. The individual start date of the internship may be flexible.

Responsibilities

  • Compile, manipulate, and refine geographic data from a variety of sources including existing maps and regulatory compliance planning data, field collection, satellite/aerial imagery, and public domain data.
  • Produce detailed, high-quality cartographic products (digital and hardcopy) and accompanying reports in accordance with technical guidelines and client needs.
  • Perform regular quality control checks of spatial and non-spatial datasets to ensure data integrity.
  • Collaborate with team members on project tasks related to GIS, database design and management, and data visualization.
  • Customize GIS workflow and software programs for data collection, engineering, and environmental modeling applications.
  • Assist in collecting and maintaining project documentation.
  • Complete training on assigned tasks.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources and conduct, and adhere to WSP's Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by business needs.

Requirements

  • Actively enrolled in an accredited Geographic Information Systems, Geography, or related, Undergraduate program with an anticipated graduation date of August 2025 or later.
  • Must be 18 or older.
  • Demonstrated interest in Geographic Information Systems, or related field, and have a strong desire to advance skills related to WSP's work and projects.
  • Experience using ESRI ArcGIS software.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office.
  • Competent interpersonal and communication skills when interacting with others, expressing ideas effectively and professionally to an engineering and non-engineering audience.
  • Capable of taking direction from leadership, mentors, and managers to executive projects.
  • Basic proficiency with technical writing, office automation, software, spreadsheets, technology, and tools.
  • Proven track record of upholding workplace safety and ability to abide by WSP's health, safety and drug/alcohol and harassment policies.
  • Authorization to work in the United States at the start of the internship.

Nice-to-haves

  • Actively enrolled in an accredited Geographic Information Systems, Geography, or related, Master's or PhD program with an anticipated graduation date of August 2025 or later.
  • Experience in producing high-quality digital and hardcopy maps, data visualization, and customization of GIS software using ArcGIS ModelBuilder and Python.
  • Prior internship and leadership involvement on campus.

Benefits

  • Compensation range of $19.57 - $26.98 per hour.
