About the position

The GIS / Data Scientist Intern will work with the Wasatch Front Regional Council (WFRC) to support various projects related to regional mapping, travel demand modeling, and land use forecasting. This internship aims to enhance the quality of life in the Salt Lake City and Ogden-Layton areas by contributing to the development and implementation of transportation plans and programs. The position is part-time, with a focus on gaining practical experience in GIS and data analysis within a metropolitan planning organization.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the WFRC Analytics Group with regional mapping and analysis projects.
  • Support travel demand modeling efforts.
  • Contribute to land use forecasting initiatives.
  • Analyze data related to road, transit, and bicycle/pedestrian travel.
  • Examine housing, parcels, and land use plans.
  • Evaluate regional employment distribution and economic development.
  • Engage in projects that enhance regional quality of life.

Requirements

  • Undergraduate or graduate student in urban planning, geography, data science, economic policy, or civil engineering.
  • Proficiency with ArcGIS Pro is strongly preferred.
  • Experience with GIS and spatial analysis.
  • Knowledge of Python coding and platforms for automating data processing tasks (R, SQL, ArcPro model builder, etc.).
  • Understanding of statistics and modeling.

Nice-to-haves

  • Interest in urban/regional information systems.
  • Familiarity with travel demand modeling.
