About the position
The GIS Developer position at VDOT's Central Office Maintenance Division involves providing advanced GIS support for various programs. The role requires the candidate to create and manage GIS maps, attributes, and reports, utilizing ArcGIS and other tools to meet the needs of VDOT field users. The candidate will also be responsible for analyzing data from various sources to populate GIS maps and provide expert advice on GIS mapping systems.
Responsibilities
- Create and manage GIS maps and associated mapping reports.
- Utilize ArcGIS for GIS mapping and analysis tasks.
- Analyze data from Excel spreadsheets and databases to create GIS maps.
- Provide expert advice and support to VDOT field users regarding GIS mapping.
- Develop and maintain linear referencing systems (LRS) and GIS applications.
- Independently develop GIS tools and applications, performing complex analyses and creating multi-layered maps.
Requirements
- BS/BA in GIS, Geography, Cartography, Computer Science, or related field with GIS experience.
- 4-8 years of experience in GIS and GIS application development.
- Minimum of 5 years of experience designing, building, and delivering web applications.
- Experience developing web applications using ArcGIS API for JavaScript or other JavaScript mapping APIs.
- Excellent problem-solving, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Experience in the development of complex analysis and mapping projects.
- High competence in ESRI GIS software suite (Arc 10.x), including knowledge of ArcSDE and ArcGIS Enterprise.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience with data extraction, analysis, and scripting tools, preferably Oracle SQL and PostgreSQL.
- Prior experience with LRS/GIS and knowledge of ESRI Roads & Highways or similar systems.
- Self-starter with a technical background in software and ability to work with minimal supervision.
- Experience in Reporting Tools such as Power BI.
