The GIS Technologist at American Water plays a crucial role in the development and technical support of Geographic Information Systems (GIS) within the organization. This position is responsible for managing the entire GIS technology stack, which includes databases, backend processes, API servers, integrations, web hosting, and frontend user interfaces. The GIS Technologist will work closely with business stakeholders to identify needs and implement new GIS products and solutions. This role requires a strong understanding of both GIS and IT methodologies, enabling the technologist to provide valuable technology guidance on how GIS is integrated across various business functions. In this position, the GIS Technologist will write scripts to support application-specific backend processes, such as data transformations and REST APIs, as well as scripts for maintaining the overall GIS IT infrastructure, including database maintenance and software management. The role also involves building frontend web applications to deliver GIS content throughout the organization. The technologist will maintain ArcGIS Enterprise software, including SDE databases and ArcGIS Server, and will collaborate with other IT domains to implement technologies that interact with GIS. Additionally, the GIS Technologist will engage closely with product owners to design and deploy GIS applications, serve as a technology expert providing guidance on GIS software architecture, and prepare technical documentation and diagrams for application and technology pipelines. The position may require travel up to 10% for company and industry conferences, emphasizing the importance of staying current with industry trends and technologies.
