About the position

The GIS Project Coordinator at the United States Geological Survey (USGS) plays a crucial role in advancing geospatial data analysis and technology. This position involves leading the development of innovative GIS projects, particularly focusing on converting high-resolution digital elevation model (DEM) and hydrographic data into essential 3D models for The National Map. The coordinator will establish a new team and production environment, ensuring effective communication between applied research and entry-level analysts, while managing project schedules, quality checks, and troubleshooting issues as they arise.

Responsibilities

  • Lead advanced GIS projects and guide a team in converting high-resolution DEM and hydrographic data into 3D models.
  • Establish a new team and production environment from scratch for GIS projects.
  • Bridge the gap between applied research and entry-level analysts.
  • Schedule tasks, check quality, and report on production progress.
  • Troubleshoot any issues that arise during project execution.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a relevant field and 4+ years of experience.
  • Demonstrated experience with the Ubuntu operating system, including installation on government equipment.
  • Proven proficiency in Esri ArcGIS Pro, GlobalMapper, LP360, QGIS, and Python scripting.
  • Strong spatial and quantitative GIS analysis skills.
  • Confirmed knowledge of PointCloud (LiDAR) data sets, elevation data, hydrographic products, and geospatial data standards.
  • Experience serving as a liaison responsible for reporting and quality control.
