About the position

The GIS Research/Data Technician position at the Research Corporation of the University of Hawaii involves compiling and updating trail and forestry information using advanced GIS technology. The role requires collaboration with partner agencies, community outreach, and fieldwork to monitor and maintain recreational trails. The technician will also be responsible for creating maps, graphics, and other materials to support the Na Ala Hele Trails and Access Program.

Responsibilities

  • Compile and update the public and private trails inventory and forestry information using ArcGIS and GPS technology.
  • Prepare GIS layers, maps, graphics, and printed materials from research and field data.
  • Source historic data sets to compile into a Geodatabase.
  • Maintain a Geodatabase of captured data.
  • Field-correct data by visiting trail sites and capturing GPS data.
  • Analyze map findings and results.
  • Assist in monitoring and maintaining recreational trails for the Na Ala Hele Trails and Access Program.
  • Develop and implement community outreach initiatives.
  • Organize and develop content for community outreach events and presentations.
  • Design and develop content for informational brochures and interpretive signage.
  • Organize and lead volunteer outings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four (4) year college or university.
  • 1-3 years of experience working with ArcGIS Pro software and in heritage management.
  • Working knowledge of word processing, spreadsheet, and database software.
  • Knowledge of Hawaiian cultural history and ecology.
  • Ability to write and comprehend planning documents and prepare maps.
  • Good organizational, communication, and computer skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate clearly both orally and in writing.
  • Skilled in the use of GIS software (ArcGIS Pro) and databases.
  • Ability to use Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) and other software for analysis and reporting.
  • Ability to use GPS equipment and read maps and aerial photographs.
  • Valid driver's license and personal driver's insurance equivalent to Hawai‘i's No-Fault Driver's Insurance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's Degree in Geography, Communications, GIS, or related fields.
  • Working knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud suite.
  • Knowledge of the State GIS and spatial analysis.
  • Experience interpreting 19th-century hand-written Hawaiian language documents.
  • Working knowledge of Hawai‘i land title laws.
  • Ability to read and write Hawaiian Language.
