About the position

The GIS Specialist II position at the University of Central Florida (UCF) is responsible for locating and marking underground utilities, responding to utility locate requests, and ensuring compliance with Florida Statutes. This role involves maintaining GIS data, utilizing Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR), and assisting with the documentation of utility infrastructure within the GIS system. The position is integral to the Utilities and Engineering Department, contributing to the management and verification of utility assets.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to utility locate requests received via the Sunshine 811 system for UCF's infrastructure, ensuring compliance with Florida State Statutes.
  • Operate and maintain GPR and other locate equipment as needed.
  • Responsible for purchasing necessary supplies for locates through WorkDay.
  • Maintain accurate digital files for documenting locate tickets, work areas, field findings, photos, and other relevant information.
  • Conduct archival research and perform secondary utility locates for field verification.
  • Digitize the data collected into the GIS system.
  • Maintain GIS data layers, ensuring accurate and up-to-date mapping of utility infrastructure and related features.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent and 2+ years of relevant experience.
  • Proficiency in GIS software (ArcGIS, QGIS, or similar), including data management, geodatabases, and feature attributes.
  • Knowledge of utility infrastructure types, including water, wastewater, chilled water, natural gas, reclaimed water, and secondary electric.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to document and manage detailed field notes, photos, and other documentation.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, for effective documentation and collaboration.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with GPR and other utility locate equipment.
  • Familiarity with the 811 system and state statutes related to utility locating.
  • Experience with soft-dig methods for utility investigation.
  • Ability to work in extreme environments and collaborate with individuals from varied backgrounds and experiences.
