About the position

The GIS Specialist is responsible for developing, maintaining, and supporting various geographic information systems (GIS) datasets and maps for the City of Katy's planning and development services. This role involves providing mapping support to internal staff and the public, ensuring accurate data integration and analysis, and producing maps for various departmental needs.

Responsibilities

• Perform data conversion/projection and integration of external data sources into GIS.
• Conduct research to locate and obtain databases.
• Gather, analyze, and integrate spatial data into existing GIS.
• Develop, maintain, update, and retrieve information for various GIS datasets including geodatabases, shapefiles, and layers.
• Produce maps and related graphics for public hearings and departmental needs.
• Prepare metadata and documentation for GIS datasets.
• Operate and maintain GIS system hardware, software, and other equipment.
• Answer questions regarding maps and related information from the public and other City departments.
• Assist in the preparation of reports.
• Participate as a member of the Emergency Management Team.

Requirements

• Associate Degree in Geography, Computer Science, or related field.
• Three (3) years of professional level GIS experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Proficient use of ESRI ArcGIS software (ArcView, ArcEditor, ArcInfo) and AutoCAD.
• Strong understanding of database design and management.
• Skilled in solving operational and procedural problems related to GIS applications.

Nice-to-haves

• GISP (Geographic Information Systems Professional) or ESRI Certificate preferred.
• Municipal experience preferred.
