About the position

The GIS Technician at Travis Central Appraisal District is responsible for specialized and technical duties related to the operation, use, and maintenance of Geographic Information Systems (GIS). This role involves creating and updating digital maps, conducting research on property ownership, and responding to GIS requests from the public and other departments. The position requires a professional attitude and self-motivation, with a typical work schedule from Monday to Friday, 7:45 am to 4:45 pm, with potential extended hours as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Create, maintain, and update digital maps, drawings, plans, spreadsheets, data files, and documentation for various uses.
  • Perform research activities to determine ownership and make corrections on existing maps.
  • Maintain and update Taxing District boundaries and identify tax roll descriptions.
  • Respond to GIS and mapping requests from employees and the public regarding property ownership and jurisdiction.
  • Assist other divisions, agencies, and the general public with GIS information.
  • Handle functions that require knowledge of tax laws.
  • Perform GIS data maintenance, analysis, entry, and conversion.

Requirements

  • A minimum of two (2) years of college/coursework in GIS is preferred, professional experience may substitute education.
  • A minimum of two (2) years of data entry experience.
  • Knowledge of basic cartographic skills, cadastral data, and land survey practices.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Outlook, and Excel.
  • Ability to read complex directions and interpret mapping information.
  • Excellent clerical skills including proficiency in mathematics (40 WPM, 10 Key by touch).
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in other GIS related software such as ESRI, ArcGIS.
