About the position

The Tennessee Eastman Hiking and Canoeing Club is seeking volunteers to assist in restoring the damage caused by Hurricane Helene on the Appalachian Trail. This volunteer opportunity involves participating in various trail repair projects, working alongside experienced trail maintainers, and contributing to the restoration efforts through hands-on tasks.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in various trail repair projects on the Appalachian Trail.
  • Work alongside experienced trail maintainers to restore trail conditions.
  • Help with assessments, safety observance, and removal of cuts as a swampers for certified chainsaw sawyers.
  • Relocate the trail around large entanglements with ribbon placement and possibly blazing.
  • Remove debris using standard loppers and handsaws.

Requirements

  • Ability to navigate difficult terrain, including going over, under, and through large fallen trees.
  • Willingness to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Basic understanding of safety equipment and procedures.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with trail maintenance or outdoor work.
  • Familiarity with using tools such as loppers and handsaws.
