About the position

The Global Process Safety Engineer at Stepan Company is responsible for enhancing Process Safety performance across the organization. This role involves providing technical expertise, overseeing Process Safety programs, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. The engineer will work closely with various sites to implement and maintain safety standards, conduct audits, and support training initiatives, all aimed at promoting a culture of continuous improvement in process safety.

Responsibilities

  • Provide active technical and management support to the sites related to the implementation and maintenance of Stepan standards and procedures.
  • Engage with EHS&S Excellence team providing feedback on new standards and participate in the preparation of the roll-out plan.
  • Conduct new standards rollout and training to sites.
  • Report and track Area KPIs.
  • Participate in the elaboration of RAGAGEPS by external committees (e.g. API, NFPA, CCPS).
  • Support sites with the implementation of OSHA PSM elements by sharing good practices, providing guidance, and promoting understanding of OSHA PSM elements.
  • Participate in OSHA PSM, EPA RMP and Stepan Process Standards audits across Stepan's network.
  • Provide technical support to close PSM/RMP recommendations from audits, especially related to complex solutions.
  • Track and report progress in the implementation of actions to address audit findings and close incident investigations.
  • Provide inputs to the development and review of the annual training program comprising Process Safety topics.
  • Act as trainer and support the execution of the training program.
  • Participate in incident investigations for Type III Process Safety Incidents or Types I and II incidents with high potential or high complexity.
  • Ensure timely closure of recommendations from Process Safety Incidents to reduce process safety risks.
  • Review Process Safety Incidents investigations for thoroughness and adequacy of recommendations.
  • Propose the extension of recommendations from incidents to similar processes/technologies.
  • Own the inventory of PHAs across Stepan's network and ensure adequate applicability.
  • Perform quality checks on PHAs led by others ensuring comprehensiveness and adherence to standards.
  • Participate in PHAs for processes using Stepan Critical materials.
  • Promote the use of EHS&S Risk Identification and Assessment to communicate risks throughout the organization.
  • Promote a culture of continuous improvement in process safety performance and identify best practices across all locations.
  • Provide technical support to manage process safety risks and review Capital Projects for compliance.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 3 years of experience as a process engineer in regulated chemical or refinery manufacturing industries.
  • Experience with flammables and reactive materials is a plus.
  • Participation in Hazop and incident investigation techniques.
  • Strong knowledge of process engineering and process safety regulations and standards, including OSHA PSM, API, and NFPA.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities.
  • Bachelor's degree in chemical engineering, Process Engineering, or a related field; Master's degree preferred.
