About the position

The Certified Occupational Therapy Assistant (COTA) at Amergis plays a crucial role in providing occupational therapy services under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist. This position focuses on enhancing students' functional abilities in a school setting through various therapeutic interventions, assessments, and documentation. The COTA is responsible for implementing treatment plans, teaching new skills, and ensuring the effective use of adaptive equipment to support students' rehabilitation and development.

Responsibilities

  • Provides interventions to impact the student's functional ability as delegated by the Occupational Therapist.
  • Understands the role of therapy in the context of the student's age and total needs perspective.
  • Participates in the ongoing assessment of the student's school environment for equipment needs and safety risks.
  • Teaches new skills or retrains students in daily activities that have become difficult due to illness or injury.
  • Reports to the Occupational Therapist regarding student progress to promote treatment modifications.
  • Maintains timely, legible, and efficient student documentation that meets district standards.
  • Instructs students in the use of adaptive equipment and ensures it is in good working order.
  • Utilizes physical agents such as heat, cold, and ultrasound as part of treatment.
  • Identifies student needs for other supportive services and notifies the Occupational Therapist.
  • Reports student reactions to treatment or changes in condition to the physician and Occupational Therapist.
  • Prepares and submits clinical progress summaries based on treatment goals and responses.
  • Participates in case conferences, meetings, and in-service education.
  • Complies with applicable laws and regulations regarding professional standards and practice.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Current certification or licensure as an Occupational Therapy Assistant in the state of practice.
  • Graduate of an accredited school of Occupational Therapy Assistant required.
  • One (1) year of experience as an Occupational Therapy Assistant preferred.
  • Pediatric experience preferred.
  • Complies with all relevant professional standards of practice.
  • Participation and completion of Amergis' Competency program when applicable.
  • Current CPR certification if applicable.
  • TB questionnaire, PPD or chest x-ray if applicable.
  • Current Health certificate as per contract or state regulation.
  • Must meet all federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Successful completion of new hire training as applicable to job site.
  • Understand patient confidentiality and HIPAA requirements.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with supervisors, co-workers, and clients in English.
  • Computer proficiency required.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
