The Government Reporter role at Community Impact is focused on informing community members about important updates related to elections, public policy, new legislation, and ballot measures. This position involves covering local city council and county commissioners court meetings in the San Marcos, Buda, and Kyle areas, and requires strong research and data visualization skills to produce impactful stories that resonate with the community.
Responsibilities
- Attend local government meetings to gather news and updates.
- Connect with local officials and community leaders to build relationships.
- Research data and create visualizations to support news stories.
- Produce 10 stories per week on relevant government topics.
- Interview sources in-person throughout the greater metro area.
- Take photos to complement written work.
- Pitch story ideas and work independently with minimal supervision.
Requirements
- Experience covering city council and school board meetings.
- Proficient in AP Style and familiar with content management systems.
- Ability to produce 10 stories per week.
- Strong research skills and experience with data visualization.
- Proven ability to develop and maintain relationships with sources.
- Demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and manage time efficiently.
Nice-to-haves
- Experience writing for a professional publication or school newspaper.
- Availability for evenings and weekends as needed to cover meetings and breaking news.
