About the position

The Cabling Technician position is a critical role within the IT department, responsible for the installation and maintenance of low voltage cabling systems across various tribal government facilities, gaming and hospitality venues, health services, and enterprises. Under the guidance of the Communications Manager, the technician will work closely with the Network team to ensure proper cable design, labeling, and connectivity to data center equipment. This role requires regular travel to tribal facilities across a seven-county service area, necessitating a proactive approach to service delivery and problem-solving. The technician will create and maintain comprehensive documentation of cabling designs and installations, ensuring clarity and accuracy for future reference. The technician will be tasked with installing, maintaining, and repairing low voltage cabling infrastructure, which includes voice, data, network, security, camera, and door access systems. This involves recommending and purchasing necessary cabling materials, adhering to industry standards for installation practices, and performing cable testing to verify integrity and functionality. The role also includes monitoring external copper and fiber optic connections, participating in preventative maintenance, and collaborating with other IT staff and external contractors to ensure seamless integration of cabling systems. In addition to technical responsibilities, the technician will maintain an inventory of cabling supplies, continuously learn about new technologies, and uphold safety regulations while working with low voltage cabling and electrical equipment. The position demands a commitment to professionalism and a customer-oriented approach to troubleshooting and resolving connectivity issues.

Responsibilities

  • Install, maintain, and repair all low voltage cabling infrastructure across multiple sites, including voice, data, network, security, camera, and door access systems.
  • Recommend and purchase cabling, installation materials, and supplies, following the IT purchasing process and approval process.
  • Utilize various cabling types like CAT5, CAT6, fiber optic, and other low voltage cables based on specific needs.
  • Ensure professional installation practices, following industry standards and best practices for cable routing, terminations, and labeling.
  • Perform cable testing using appropriate tools to verify cable integrity and functionality.
  • Install and maintain wall jacks and ports for network connectivity throughout all locations.
  • Maintain and secure all of the organization's tools and equipment provided and used to perform job duties.
  • Monitor the condition of external copper or fiber optic connections between sites, identifying potential issues and reporting them promptly.
  • Participate in preventative maintenance activities for external cable infrastructure to ensure reliable connectivity.
  • Participate in the design process for new low voltage cabling infrastructure projects, providing technical insight and recommendations.
  • Work effectively with other IT staff and external contractors to ensure smooth installation and integration of cabling systems with other communication components.
  • Adapt and adjust work schedules to accommodate other trades and project timelines efficiently.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of cabling infrastructure layouts, cable types, and port assignments for future reference.
  • Adhere to established safety regulations and procedures for working with low voltage cabling and electrical equipment.
  • Place and provide initial configuration of endpoint equipment when practical (phones, cameras, computer, A/V device, etc.).
  • Maintain an inventory of cabling supplies and tools under the direction of the IT Communications Manager.
  • Continuously learn about new cabling technologies and best practices to maintain expertise.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area, ensuring proper handling and storage of cabling materials and tools.
  • Report any equipment damage or malfunctions to the IT Communications Manager promptly.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent required.
  • One year of experience in low voltage cable installation and maintenance required.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be insurable by the Sault Tribe Insurance Department.
  • Must comply with annual driver's license review and insurability standards with the Sault Tribe Insurance Department.
  • Must undergo a Criminal background investigation done under the rules of the National Indian Gaming Commission.
  • Will be required to complete and pass pre-employment drug testing.
  • In-depth knowledge of low voltage cabling standards and best practices for voice, data, network, security, camera, and door access systems.
  • Understanding of different low voltage cable types (CAT5, CAT6, Fiber Optic, etc.) and their appropriate applications.
  • Knowledge of proper cable termination techniques (punch-down, crimping, etc.) and proficiency using cable testing equipment.
  • Basic understanding of network infrastructure concepts and how cabling systems support network connectivity.
  • Familiarity with safety regulations regarding low voltage cabling installations and electrical environments.
