Full-time - Intern
Golden, CO
Professional, Scientific, and Technical Services

About the position

The National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) is seeking a Graduate Intern in Electrical Engineering for a fixed-term internship lasting 6 to 12 months. This position is based in Golden, Colorado, where the intern will engage in critical research and development activities focused on renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies. The intern will primarily work on developing control algorithms to troubleshoot sub-synchronous oscillations observed in the UNIFI 1-MW multi-vendor grid-forming inverter testbed. This involves designing a microgrid controller to effectively dispatch various energy sources, including grid-forming inverters and diesel generators, based on specific system objectives. The intern will be responsible for implementing control algorithms using Python and will have the opportunity to contribute to peer-reviewed conference and journal papers. The role requires a commitment of 40 hours per week, with the expectation that the intern will work exclusively onsite at NREL's laboratory. The internship is designed for students who are currently enrolled in a full-time undergraduate or graduate program, or who have recently completed their degrees. The position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in a supportive and inclusive work environment, where collaboration and innovation are highly valued. NREL is committed to promoting diversity and inclusion within its workforce, and encourages candidates from all backgrounds to apply. The internship may be extended based on performance and mutual agreement, providing a pathway for further professional development in the field of electrical engineering and renewable energy.
