About the position

Walsh University is a member of NCAA Division II that competes in the Great Midwest Athletic Conference. The Graduate Assistant-Men's Assistant Rugby Coach (GA) is responsible for assisting the coaching staff in coaching/mentoring student-athletes technically and tactically on the field, as well as, guiding them through academic achievement and personal development. The graduate assistant coach is also responsible for helping retain student-athletes and the day-to-day practice regimen. The GA Coach reports to Director of Rugby/Head Coach.

Responsibilities

  • Assists the head coach to communicate goals, expectations, and accountability to help maintain high standard of performance, ethics, and sportsmanship on the field, in the classroom, and in the community.
  • Create a relationship built on the sincere interest in each student-athletes' academic, athletic, and personal pursuits.
  • Collaborate with other college staff when/if necessary.
  • Assists with the process to plan, organize and facilitate individual and team training and competition.
  • Assists in the coordination of travel arrangements.
  • Assists in completion and processing of paperwork as requested.
  • Works cooperatively with personnel in the athletic department, attends department meetings and activities as needed, and always represents the University in a positive manner when interacting with the community, alumni, coaches, the media and the general public.
  • Educates and mentors student athletes in all aspects of their holistic development; mind, body and spirit.
  • Establishing an environment that supports and promotes academic excellence in student-athletes.
  • Study and implement strategy and skills needed to prepare for competition.
  • Learn, know, and abide by NCAA Division II rules and regulations.
  • Lead in a way that positively reflects the mission and vision of the institution.
  • Adhere to rules, guidelines and principles set forth by the Rugby East Conference.
  • Failure to comply by NCAA II rules will be grounds for discipline and/or termination.
  • Assists the head coach and staff to plan, communicate, create, and model the same expectations as the head coach.
  • Establish and maintain an alumni relationship.
  • Be creative and willing to fundraise to support operating budget.
  • Other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Must be accepted/enrolled in a Walsh University graduate program and remain in good standing in the program.
  • Experience as a high school or college player, coach, or other significant experience relative to the sport of rugby.
  • Professional demeanor and ability to interact with charity towards students, staff and faculty.
  • First Aid, CPR, AED certification required.
  • Valid Driver's license.
  • Ability to lead under pressure and in difficult situations.
