About the position

The Graduate Program Coordinator and Advisor at the University of California, Santa Barbara is responsible for overseeing and managing all aspects of the Graduate Program in the Department of Sociology. This role involves advising graduate students, managing admissions and recruitment, overseeing academic student employment, and ensuring compliance with university policies. The coordinator plays a crucial role in supporting students' academic journeys while promoting diversity and inclusivity within the program.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee and manage all aspects of the Graduate Program in the Department of Sociology.
  • Advise current and prospective graduate students on degree requirements and maintaining time to degree.
  • Manage graduate admissions and recruitment processes.
  • Oversee academic student employee payroll and funding management.
  • Collaborate with faculty leadership on curriculum planning and development.
  • Evaluate program efficiency and effectiveness, and prepare reports for faculty leadership.
  • Coordinate comprehensive exams and degree defenses, and verify degrees.
  • Maintain graduate student records and databases on student progress.
  • Develop and revise the graduate program handbook and ensure policy changes are communicated to students.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience/training.
  • 1-3 years of experience in academic advising and/or student support services in higher education.
  • Ability to provide support to underrepresented minorities and promote diversity through inclusivity.
  • Excellent writing skills to produce accurate website information.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships with various campus offices.

Nice-to-haves

  • Strong organizational skills and ability to handle multiple tasks under pressure.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, assertiveness, and diplomacy.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and discretion while paying attention to detail.
  • Thorough experience with Microsoft Office Suite & Google Workspace.
  • Knowledge of college/school policies, procedures, and requirements.
