About the position

The Graduate Research Assistant (GRA) for the Buffalo Creek Watershed Project at the University of West Georgia will conduct field surveys and data analysis to support a stream restoration proposal. This role involves mapping the stream bed, collecting water quality data, and assessing fish and macroinvertebrate populations. The GRA will collaborate with faculty, undergraduate students, and external partners to prepare an M.S. thesis and contribute to community engagement efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field surveys to map the Buffalo Creek stream bed and assess channel topography and riparian vegetation.
  • Collect water quality data including temperature, dissolved oxygen, conductivity, pH, and salinity.
  • Determine fish and macroinvertebrate composition and indices of biotic integrity (IBIs) for the Buffalo Creek Study Area.
  • Use and maintain sampling equipment in remote sites to ensure data integrity and conduct habitat assessments.
  • Perform data processing and analysis related to the collected samples.
  • Prepare and defend an M.S. thesis based on the research findings.
  • Assist in the preparation and delivery of reports, presentations, and peer-reviewed publications.

Requirements

  • Earned a Bachelor's degree.
  • Accepted and enrolled in a graduate degree program at UWG.
  • Enrolled as a full-time student in a graduate program of study.
  • Maintained a 3.0 GPA in previous and current graduate coursework.
  • Ability to carry/backpack a minimum of 35 lbs.
  • Ability to manage and schedule project activities under variable environmental conditions.
  • Ability to supervise undergraduate research students.

Nice-to-haves

  • Bachelor's degree in Biology or related discipline.
