About the position

The Graduate Researcher position at Chaminade University of Honolulu is a temporary, part-time role focused on the development and implementation of programs that leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to address health inequities in Hawaii and Pacific Island communities. The researcher will engage with various stakeholders, including undergraduate students and community members, to create evidence-based solutions and assess program outcomes. This role is grant-funded and is expected to run from October 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025, with potential for renewal based on funding availability and performance.

Responsibilities

  • Design and implement AI/ML educational and outreach interventions aimed at addressing health inequities in Hawaii and Pacific Island communities.
  • Lead the piloting, assessment, and refinement of these interventions to create transferable models that can be adapted for use in other communities or settings.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to develop evidence-based solutions that integrate AI/ML technology with public health objectives.
  • Engage undergraduate students, community members, and academic professionals in AI/ML-driven programs to foster greater understanding and participation in health equity initiatives.
  • Conduct research to evaluate the impact of AI/ML interventions, and develop models for scaling these approaches to support health equity across diverse populations.
  • Facilitate academic dialogue and knowledge exchange through seminars, workshops, and other community-focused initiatives.
  • Ensure interventions are aligned with the specific health challenges faced by Hawaii and Pacific Island communities, demonstrating a deep understanding of local public health needs and inequities.
  • Disseminate findings and best practices through presentations, reports, and publications to contribute to ongoing discussions on AI/ML in health equity.
  • Contributes narrative and data/analysis on request for scholarly publications, grant applications, grant reports, and presentations.

Requirements

  • BS degree in Biology or related discipline, MS in Public Health or Epidemiology.
  • Demonstrated experience in addressing public health challenges and health inequities in Hawaii and Pacific Island communities.

Nice-to-haves

  • Planned career progression towards doctoral-level education and research in the field of Pacific health, with a focus on public health and epidemiology.
  • Prior experience implementing data science to address health inequity in the region.
  • At least 1 year of experience working in Hawai'i and/or Pacific Island public health or epidemiology setting.
