About the position

The Grants and Contracts Associate at Northern Illinois University is responsible for managing budgeting, accounting, compliance, and financial reporting related to sponsored agreements. This role supports the university's mission by ensuring proper financial management of grants and contracts, advising faculty and staff on compliance matters, and facilitating the establishment and closure of grant accounts.

Responsibilities

• Review grant expenditures and approve spending requests for a designated portfolio of funds.
• Reconcile payrolls and prepare quarterly and annual fiscal reports.
• Make compliance judgments by interpreting terms of agreements from awarding agencies.
• Ensure costs applied to sponsored projects are allowable and consistent with policies.
• Establish new grant accounts and prepare necessary documents in PeopleSoft and InfoEd systems.
• Analyze financial reports and prepare invoices to bring in revenue.
• Close accounts by finalizing revenue and expenses and preparing final fiscal reports.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Assistant Director.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in business administration, accounting, finance, economics, or a related field.
• Knowledge of federal, state, and funding agencies' policies and procedures applicable to grants and contracts administration.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
• Strong interpersonal skills to work with a diverse community.
• Ability to analyze data and formulate conclusions.

Nice-to-haves

• Master's degree in a related field.
• CPA, CRA, or CFRA certification.
• Experience in research administration in a higher education setting.
• Knowledge of PeopleSoft, InfoEd, and OnBase systems.
• Experience with data analytics and database reporting.
