About the position

Walt Disney Imagineering is the creative force behind the design and development of Disney theme parks, resorts, attractions, and cruise ships worldwide. As a Graphic Designer Principal, you will play a pivotal role in creating signage and show graphics that tell the stories of Disney's immersive experiences. This position requires a blend of creativity, technical expertise, and leadership skills to guide the graphic design process from conception to implementation. You will work closely with a diverse team of professionals across various disciplines, ensuring that the graphic design aligns with project strategies, schedules, and budgets. Your contributions will not only enhance the visual storytelling of Disney's environments but also inspire guests and create memorable experiences. In this role, you will be responsible for developing the graphics scope and program, leading the implementation of design intent, and supporting environmental graphic design in collaboration with other disciplines. You will address questions during the sign construction bid process, resolve field issues, and ensure adherence to established graphic design standards. Your expertise will be crucial in managing complex projects that require advanced technical knowledge, including sign code requirements and materials application. You will also lead a team of designers, providing real-time feedback and overseeing the development of graphic design solutions. As a leader, you will coordinate communication regarding graphic design issues with project leads and participate in global graphic team meetings. Your extensive experience in environmental graphic design, combined with your ability to analyze and solve complex design problems, will be essential in delivering high-quality signage that meets both creative and functional requirements. Responsibilities

  • Develop Graphics scope/program and lead implementation of design intent as a member of the project design team.
  • Support Environmental Graphic Design in collaboration with other disciplines.
  • Implement project goals/objectives through problem-solving and development of graphic design solutions.
  • Answer questions during the sign construction bid process and resolve field issues.
  • Be responsible for environmental graphic design for large or highly complex projects.
  • Lead the development of Graphic Signage fabrication and/or manufacturing specifications.
  • Coordinate and communicate Graphic design issues with the project lead.
  • Establish Graphic design standards for a project and monitor design team adherence.
  • Lead development of graphic scope as it relates to code-required signage for projects.
  • Act as the functional leader when needed and oversee the development of graphic design.
  • Review, redline, and approve all design packages prior to vendor/contractor bid.
  • Partner with the functional leader on labor resources, planning, and scheduling of graphic projects.
  • Participate and represent WDI Anaheim on all global graphic team meetings.

Requirements

  • Expert level understanding of Sign Code requirements.
  • Familiarity with BIM standards.
  • Proficiency in understanding wayfinding systems.
  • Demonstrated experience with programming Graphic Signage for various facility types.
  • Ability to estimate labor and production/installation costs for Graphic signage.
  • Working understanding of Contract processes and Project Life Cycle planning.
  • A minimum of 12 years in practice with thorough knowledge of sign construction materials.
  • Mature professional judgment in analyzing and solving complex design problems.
  • Knowledge of cost and creative value of Graphic signage.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop strategies/systems to solve graphical challenges.
  • A minimum of five years leading a team of designers in environmental graphics and signage design.
  • Construction phase experience including submittal/shop drawing review and on-site inspections.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in planning, budgeting, and leading a team of Environmental Graphic Designers.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with thematic applications in sign construction materials.
