About the position

The Graphic Designer in the Office of Marketing at Kentucky State University plays a crucial role in visualizing and creating a variety of graphics, including illustrations, logos, layouts, and photos. This position operates under general supervision and is responsible for designing both electronic and printed materials, exhibit elements, and illustrations for a wide range of university publications, displays, and other media. The Graphic Designer will support Kentucky State University faculty and staff by producing marketing and promotional materials, which includes design work for both paid and earned media campaigns. In addition to creating visually appealing designs, the Graphic Designer will engage in conceptual development, innovating projects across various mediums. Effective communication of ideas is essential, as the designer will present concepts through presentations, web media, print media, and prototypes. Attention to detail is paramount, and the ability to work well under pressure and meet tight deadlines is necessary, with the possibility of after-hours work. The role requires collaboration with faculty and staff to identify their graphic needs, budget constraints, and project deadlines, serving as a liaison between clients and printers or publishers. The Graphic Designer will also coordinate the printing production process, ensuring quality and accuracy in the final products. This position may involve writing and editing basic copy, maintaining digital records, and providing technical computer support as needed.

Responsibilities

  • Conceptualizes, designs, and produces curriculum, training, and/or promotional materials such as flyers, ads, brochures, logos, office signage, exhibits, and/or displays.
  • Designs and produces print-ready art including graphs, charts, clip art, posters, digitization of graphics, line art, and/or photos.
  • Creates electronically-designed page layouts and imports word processing files into page layouts, as appropriate to the position; develops and produces web-based graphics, as requested.
  • Produces technical and scientific illustrations for presentations and/or publication, as appropriate to the requirements of the position.
  • Consults with faculty and staff to identify their graphics needs, budget constraints, and reasonable deadlines for the project; serves as a liaison between the client and printers/publishers.
  • Coordinates the printing production process to ensure quality: writes printing and other reproduction specifications (selects ink, paper, and print quality); inspects proofs for accuracy; recommends contractors (typesetters, printers, illustrators, photographers, cartographers).
  • Writes and edits basic copy, as appropriate, which may include press releases in some instances.
  • May coordinate a graphics or photographic library and/or maintain digital records.
  • May provide technical computer support and install software programs.
  • May coordinate and lead the work of others.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Marketing, or related field.
  • Three years of experience directly related to the duties and responsibilities specified.
  • Knowledge of principles and practices of graphic design.
  • Proficiency in design software including Adobe Creative Cloud and others.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to effectively communicate with a wide range of individuals and constituencies in a diverse community.
  • Ability to create and produce graphic materials using a range of media, methods, techniques, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of graphic layout and photographic requirements and procedures.
  • Skills in the utilization of specified computerized graphic design programs.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
  • Ability to analyze graphic and technical information and create interpretive illustrations.
  • Budget development and management skills as related to the production of new digital or traditional media communications.
  • Ability to analyze and interpret user graphic requirements.
  • Knowledge of printing and/or reproduction processes and techniques.
  • Knowledge of printing procedures and requirements.
  • Ability to develop print and/or reproduction specifications.
