About the position

The Graphic Designer at Pittsburgh Public Schools is responsible for creating and producing visual content that supports the district's communication and engagement efforts. This role focuses on maintaining a consistent visual identity across various platforms and collaborating with internal teams to meet project goals and deadlines.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain and develop Pittsburgh Public Schools' visual identity, ensuring alignment with branding guidelines for all digital and print content.
  • Design and produce a variety of marketing materials, including brochures, newsletters, presentations, digital graphics, and advertisements, ensuring consistency in branding and messaging.
  • Collaborate with the Communications and Stakeholder Engagement teams to meet project deadlines and support district-wide initiatives.
  • Manage production schedules and liaise with external vendors to ensure timely and high-quality output of printed materials.
  • Act as a key contributor to storytelling efforts, creating visuals that clearly communicate the district's goals and values to stakeholders and the community.
  • Work with staff to create and edit layouts and graphics, and to understand the project's audience and message.
  • Provide design feedback and guidance to departments and schools to ensure all projects align with district messaging and quality standards.
  • Respond to general design inquiries such as requests for logos, fonts, and colors.
  • Keep design guidelines, templates, digital assets, and graphic archives up to date.
  • Participate in departmental, team, and individual planning and goal-setting.
  • Communicate effectively and confidentially at all levels, over the phone, face-to-face, and electronically.
  • Other relevant duties as assigned by supervisor in support of the department's goals and objectives and the District's mission and Superintendent's Priority Goals.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Graphic Design, Visual Arts, Communications, or a related field.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in graphic design, with demonstrated expertise in creating cohesive branding for large organizations, preferably in K-12 education.
  • Experience with both print and digital media is essential.
  • Mastery of Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign).
  • Solid understanding of design principles, typography, and color theory.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain design concepts to non-design stakeholders.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet tight deadlines while maintaining high design standards.
  • Strong attention to detail, creativity, and a passion for visual storytelling.
  • Knowledge of copyright laws and best practices related to design work.
  • Demonstrated proficiency in MS Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, and Word.

Nice-to-haves

  • Familiarity with HTML, video editing, and social media graphics is preferred.
