About the position

The Graphic Designer at the University of Utah plays a crucial role in the College of Education by evaluating client needs, conceptualizing ideas, and creating visual designs that effectively communicate the intended message. This position requires the use of sophisticated computer equipment and software programs to produce high-quality artwork for various marketing materials while adhering to established budgets. The designer will engage with clients to understand their requirements, budget constraints, and deadlines, ensuring that the final product meets their expectations. In this role, the designer will conduct thorough research and study ideas related to each project, allowing for the development of original work that aligns with the project’s intent. The designer will also be responsible for preparing cost estimates, balancing project needs with available resources. A wide range of artistic materials will be designed, including catalogs, posters, brochures, and billboards, utilizing advanced design techniques and software. The designer will finalize projects by ensuring that all artwork is ready for printing, which includes determining the size and arrangement of materials, selecting appropriate typography, and choosing color schemes. A critical part of the job involves completing pre-press checks to ensure that all elements are accurate and ready for production. Additionally, the designer may collaborate with outside vendors, such as photographers and illustrators, to achieve specific artistic styles. The position may also involve maintaining and troubleshooting department computer hardware and software to ensure optimal performance.

Responsibilities

  • Meets with clients initially to determine needs, budget and deadlines; meets subsequently to discuss changes and finalize project.
  • Researches and studies ideas related to each project; conceptualizes original work to communicate intent of project.
  • Develops cost estimates for clients by balancing the needs of the project with the available budget.
  • Designs a wide range of artistic material, e.g. catalog, poster, brochure, billboard, etc. using sophisticated computer equipment and software programs.
  • Produces art for assigned project by following a pasteboard technique on the computer, and finalizes in a manner that is ready for printing.
  • Determines size and arrangement of illustrative material and copy, selects style and size of type, chooses color/s and arranges layout based upon available space.
  • Completes pre-press check by ensuring colors and saturation are exact, overlap properly and do not leave gaps, and ensures inks are solid and in the correct place.
  • May hire outside vendors including photographers, illustrators and/or production artists to meet particular styles of photography, or illustration.
  • May keep department computer hardware and software running and up-to-date by troubleshooting problems and reviewing new programs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Illustration, or a related area, or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience) required.
  • 3 years of related experience required.
  • A portfolio at the time of the interview is required.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills required.
  • Ability to work under pressure to meet deadlines required.
  • Commitment to provide excellent customer service required.
