About the position

The Graphic Designer at the University of La Verne plays a crucial role in producing engaging and creative graphic designs that transform concepts and ideas into stunning visual representations across both print and digital media. This position operates under the guidance of the Director of Creative Services within the Office of Strategic Marketing and Communications. The Graphic Designer is responsible for designing and developing original, high-quality graphic design content that supports the university's goals for recruitment, retention, and enhancing its reputation among various audiences, including traditional undergraduate students, graduate students, adult learners, administration, and campus partners. In a fast-paced environment, the Graphic Designer is expected to manage multiple projects simultaneously while adhering to tight deadlines. This individual serves as a strategic storyteller, engaging, informing, and inspiring prospective students and campus constituents with creative designs that resonate and extend the University of La Verne's reach beyond a 55-mile radius. The role requires a blend of creativity, technical skills, and the ability to collaborate effectively with various stakeholders to ensure that all designs align with the university's branding and messaging standards. The Graphic Designer will be involved in all stages of the design process, from conceptualization to final production, ensuring that all materials produced are on-brand and appropriate for the intended audience. This includes conducting research, iterating designs based on feedback, and performing quality control to maintain high standards in all graphic outputs. The position also involves collaboration with colleagues in the Office of Strategic Marketing and Communications to understand project objectives and ensure that designs meet branding standards and accurately express the university's messaging.

Responsibilities

  • Concept, develop, and produce graphics, illustrations, and other creative materials for print, web, social, and other digital platforms that are on-brand and appropriate for various audiences.
  • Research and study ideas related to each project; conceptualize original work to communicate the intent of the project.
  • Iterate designs based on feedback from team members or campus partners.
  • Determine size and arrangement of illustrative material and copy, select style and size of type, choose colors, and arrange layout based upon available space.
  • Perform quality control on all designs, ensuring the creative aligns with brand guidelines and university standards.
  • Prepare initial rough drafts and present ideas to internal stakeholders.
  • Study design request briefs and determine requirements.
  • Collaborate with Office of Strategic Marketing and Communications colleagues and campus partners to understand the objective of each campaign and project.
  • Obtain input from MarComm leadership to ensure designs meet branding standards and represent the university appropriately.
  • Coordinate and assist with print production services, including working with print vendors and preparing files to print specifications.
  • Attend photo shoots to provide art direction and update internal shared drives with produced assets.
  • Research graphic design and visual communication best practices within and outside of the higher education industry.
  • Elevate and ideate the university brand guidelines as needed to push the university brand forward.
  • Understand and follow established processes for editing, reviewing, and finalizing projects within project management software.
  • Be a culturally competent employee who attends mandatory diversity and inclusivity trainings.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Two years of professional work experience as a designer, multimedia designer, or marketing communications professional.
  • Minimum of two years experience with creative concept development, design planning, art/photo direction, and multimedia design.
  • Expertise in Adobe Creative Suite, especially Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign.
  • Ability to package files for print production.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and stay within project scope and budget in a fast-paced, deadline-driven work environment.
  • Ability to follow established processes for editing, reviewing, and finalizing projects within project management software.
