About the position

BlueWater Federal is seeking a Graphic Designer to support a FEMA program, focusing on the development and implementation of a U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) style guide. This role involves creating and updating graphical content for mobile applications while ensuring compliance with federal accessibility standards. The position is fully remote, allowing for flexibility in work location.

Responsibilities

  • Develop a FEMA U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) style guide that augments and supports the Department of Homeland Security's implementation of USWDS as well as FEMA branding guidance.
  • Provide support to update graphical content within the mobile app, using human-centered design principles.
  • Provide DHS certified 508 Trusted Testers, developers, and Graphics support.
  • Explore and research U.S. Web Design System (USWDS) application to the FEMA App and develop a design plan that incrementally adopts USWDS components into the design of the FEMA App.
  • Document gaps in USWDS components for App functionality and work with FEMA app team and other stakeholders such as DHS and GSA to discuss USWDS app implementation challenges or new component designs needed to address gaps.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in graphic design, Interaction Design, User Experience, or a related field. Equivalent work experience will also be considered.
  • 7+ years of graphic design experience is required.
  • Must have or be eligible for a High-risk Public Trust; US Citizenship required.
  • Demonstrated experience in applying human-centered design principles to update and create graphical content for websites and mobile apps.
  • Ability to prioritize user experience and accessibility in all design work.
  • 508 Compliance and Accessibility: Certified 508 Trusted Tester or significant experience with Section 508 compliance, including conducting accessibility testing and developing graphics that meet federal accessibility standards.
  • Proficiency in design software such as Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, XD), Axure, Figma, or Sketch.
  • Ability to create wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes that align with FEMA branding and USWDS guidelines.
  • Ability to explore and research the application of design systems to mobile apps, identify gaps or challenges, and develop innovative solutions.
  • Experience in iterative design processes and user testing.
  • Strong familiarity with USWDS and its application in developing style guides, particularly in a government context.
