About the position

The Graphics and Multimedia Specialist position at the Department of Defense involves developing, coordinating, and implementing various graphics and multimedia projects to support the Joint Staff (J5). The role requires creativity and technical skills to produce visual communication materials that effectively convey mission and messaging needs.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares art, graphics, and creates brochures, booklets, posters, and other advertising materials using traditional design techniques and desktop publishing software.
  • Executes illustrations, sketches, and drawings, including caricatures and cartooning.
  • Creates abstract designs for various media including videos, slides, films, Internet sites, and multimedia presentations.
  • Serves as the principal advisor to the J5 Chief of Staff on matters related to graphic hardware and software, print advertising, art media, graphic style, technique, colors, and layout.
  • Advises the J5 Chief of Staff on effective graphic and design avenues to reach target audiences efficiently and economically.
  • Maintains a graphics log to track deadlines and work assignments for all graphics and multimedia projects.
  • Provides on-site guidance, advice, creative direction, and training to program directors on graphics-related issues.

Requirements

  • One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service, including creating visual information products to communicate mission and messaging needs.
  • Experience in planning, directing, coordinating, and establishing priorities to develop and support project needs.
  • Proficiency in preparing art, graphics, and creating brochures, booklets, posters, and other advertising materials using traditional design techniques and desktop publishing software.
  • Experience in creating abstract designs for various media including videos, slides, films, Internet sites, and multimedia presentations.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree.
  • Experience in advising senior officials on graphic design and multimedia strategies.
