About the position

The New York Times is seeking a skilled graphics editor to create interactive graphics for weather coverage, including day-to-day weather and extreme weather events. This role involves collaboration with designers, developers, and editors to produce analytical journalism and innovative visual approaches to weather reporting. The graphics editor will engage in original reporting and apply journalistic and visual judgment to ensure accuracy and clarity in their work, all while supporting the mission of independent journalism.

Responsibilities

  • Create interactive graphics for weather coverage, including live displays of weather data and interactive maps.
  • Collaborate with designers, developers, and editors to produce analytical journalism.
  • Pursue original reporting related to weather events.
  • Exercise journalistic and visual judgment to ensure accuracy and clarity in graphics.
  • Develop new visual approaches to weather coverage, including statistical visualizations and animations.

Requirements

  • At least three years of relevant experience in graphics editing or a related field.
  • Expertise in web development, including JavaScript, HTML, and CSS.
  • Strong visual and interactive design skills, with a clear understanding of typography, layout, color, motion, and user behavior.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and adapt to changes in a fast-paced news environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with geospatial data in various formats.
  • Technical creativity, curiosity, and versatility.
  • Experience working with, analyzing, or visualizing weather or climate data.
  • Genuine excitement about finding, exploring, and transforming data sets.
  • Experience coding in Svelte.
