The Digital News Design group at The New York Times is seeking a technologically-savvy interactive designer/editor to join their award-winning multimedia team in the newsroom. This role is crucial in crafting rich, multimedia experiences for a variety of projects, including news and enterprise stories, across multiple platforms. The ideal candidate will be a pragmatic innovator, capable of generating creative ideas for presenting the work produced across the newsroom. This position is hybrid, requiring regular attendance in the New York City office each week as per departmental guidance. In this role, you will collaborate with reporters, editors, producers, designers, and software developers to determine the needs and possibilities for graphics and multimedia packages. This includes creating statistical visualizations, video, photography, audio, and animations. You will be expected to make exceptional contributions to the journalism produced by The New York Times and engage with colleagues to foster an environment of learning and constructive dialogue about the work. A strong commitment to the mission of seeking the truth and helping people understand the world is essential, as is support for journalistic independence. The position reports to an assistant editor and requires a minimum of 5 years of digital design experience, with a portfolio that showcases high-quality and relevant work. The successful candidate will have expertise in various design areas, including layout, typography, UX, product design, art direction, and motion. Front-end web development experience using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript is also necessary, along with the ability to conceive and implement presentations that incorporate audio, video, still images, and text in sophisticated ways across various digital platforms.
