About the position

The Greenhouse Research Assistant position is a full-time role based in Johnston, IA, where the successful candidate will work in a greenhouse environment. This role involves a variety of tasks related to plant care and research, including seeding, pollinating, transplanting, watering, harvesting, and tissue sampling. The assistant will also be responsible for data collection and maintaining accurate records of experiments and plant care activities. The ideal candidate will have a background in horticulture or a related field, with a strong attention to detail and the ability to work in a warm, humid environment where pollen is present year-round. Daily responsibilities will include the care of greenhouse plants, which encompasses a range of activities from seeding to harvesting. The assistant will cut and store samples of plant tissue for laboratory analysis and assist in conducting experiments while collecting and recording data. Routine sanitation tasks will also be part of the job, ensuring that the greenhouse remains a safe and clean environment for plant growth and research activities. This position is temporary and offers a pay rate of $21 per hour, with first shift hours from 7:30 am to 4:00 pm, Monday through Friday, and rotational weekend work every sixth weekend. Additionally, there are bonuses available, including $500 after six months and $1000 after twelve months of employment.

Responsibilities

  • Daily greenhouse plant care, including seeding, pollinating, transporting, watering, harvesting, and seed handling for various crops.
  • Cut and store samples of plant tissue and deliver them for laboratory analysis.
  • Assist with experiments, collecting data, and maintaining records.
  • Perform routine greenhouse sanitation tasks like discarding regulated material and removing waste.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma/GED required; AA/BA preferred in agriculture, horticulture, plant physiology, or molecular biology, or 2 years of equivalent experience.
  • Strong attention to detail and basic computer skills.
  • Ability to stand and sit for long periods, extensive walking, and lift up to 30 lbs.
  • Able to work in a warm, humid greenhouse with pollen present year-round.
