About the position

The Grid Applications Engineer position at Xcel Energy is a technical role focused on power distribution system operations and automation. The successful candidate will serve as a subject matter expert, contributing to the development of new principles and concepts while managing complex projects. This role requires innovative problem-solving and the ability to work independently towards broad organizational goals. The position is available at various levels (Principal, Senior, Staff, Entry) based on the candidate's experience and skills, with responsibilities including technical leadership, project management, and advising management and customers on advanced technical matters.

Responsibilities

  • Act as a technical engineer and subject matter expert in power distribution system operations and automation.
  • Conceive plans and conduct research to develop procedures, codes, and standards in complex problem areas.
  • Lead multiple critical and complex projects including research, design, equipment specification, installation, and evaluation.
  • Advise management and customers on advanced technical research studies and applications.
  • Manage bid and evaluation processes, including preparation of bid documents and technical evaluations.
  • Serve as the organization spokesperson on advanced projects and programs, influencing internal and external communications.
  • Provide oversight and mentoring to engineers, interns, and technicians, fostering knowledge transfer and self-development.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering from an ABET accredited curriculum (or recognized equivalency).
  • 9+ years relevant engineering experience for Principal level; 5+ years for Senior level; 2+ years for Staff level; 0+ years for Entry level.
  • PE (Professional Engineer) registration required for Principal level; EIT/FE (Engineer in Training/Fundamentals of Engineering) required for Senior level.
  • Ability to demonstrate unique technical skills and core competencies established by the organization.

Nice-to-haves

  • Distribution operation experience with ADMS applications (e.g., IVVO, FLISR), Field Area Network (FAN), and Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI).
  • Experience with capacitor banks/reclosers operations and settings.
  • General understanding of SCADA systems with wireless communications.
  • Experience in automation tools such as SQL, PI Vision, PI AF, MS Power Apps, and Python.
