About the position

Center For Family Services is seeking a professional and socially and culturally sensitive individual for the Grief Counselor position for the Survivors of Homicide Program. This program provides emotional support, counseling, and education to guide individuals who are grieving the loss of a loved one by homicide through a process of healing and recovery. The position requires a flexible schedule, primarily in the afternoons and evenings, to accommodate the needs of clients. The Grief Counselor will be responsible for providing clinical services using modalities of individual, group, and psycho-education, adhering to goals and methods specific to trauma counseling, and ensuring a clinical care coordination approach. The role involves traveling to different Center For Family Services' building sites and off-site locations such as schools or community centers. The counselor must be able to sit for extended periods, up to 4 hours, and will participate in various training sessions, including TF-CBT and other trauma-specific interventions. The counselor will perform clinical assessments, develop service plans in collaboration with clients, and facilitate coordination of services among various agencies. Additionally, the counselor will complete documentation and reporting requirements as per Center For Family Services standards and grant requirements, participate in regular clinical supervision, and engage in multi-disciplinary meetings and case conferences. The Grief Counselor will promote cultural humility in client care and staff interactions, responding respectfully to the strengths and skills of diverse ethnicities and cultures, languages, socio-economic classes, disabilities, religions, genders, sexual orientation, and other diversity-related factors. This position is crucial in providing support to individuals navigating the complex emotions associated with grief and loss due to homicide, and it requires a commitment to confidentiality and a strengths-based, recovery-focused philosophy.

Responsibilities

  • Travel to different Center For Family Services' building sites and off-site locations such as schools or community centers.
  • Perform clinical assessment of clients.
  • Administer and score standardized assessment tools where applicable.
  • Develop a service plan in collaboration with the client that is hope-centered and includes long-term goals, short-term objectives, and interventions.
  • Provide clinical services using modalities of individual, group, and psycho-education.
  • Adhere to goals, methods, and interventions specific to trauma counseling including a clinical care coordination approach.
  • Facilitate coordination of services among various agencies; advocate for and link clients to additional services as needed.
  • Complete documentation and other reporting requirements as per Center For Family Services standards and grant requirements.
  • Participate in regular clinical supervision per the guidelines of their professional organization.
  • Participate in multi-disciplinary meetings, case conference meetings, and agency-wide meetings.
  • Participate in staff training that may include TF-CBT, Cognitive Processing Therapy, and other trauma-specific interventions.
  • Perform specialized activities and functions specific to the program.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in psychology, social work, counseling, or related field.
  • NJ Licensed: LSW, LAC, MFT, LCSW, LPC, LPAT required.
  • Experience providing individual and group counseling.
  • Knowledge of trauma-informed care and adverse childhood experiences.
  • Ability to connect with individuals with varying backgrounds and demonstrate cultural humility.
  • Commitment to provide and maintain confidentiality.
  • Demonstrate a strengths-based, recovery-focused philosophy.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Communicate ideas clearly in both written and verbal form.
  • Willing to work a flexible schedule and in a hybrid environment, including in office, Telehealth, school, and community settings.
  • Bilingual in Spanish preferred.
  • Valid driver's license in the state of residence, insurance, and clean driving record.
