Grocery Department Manager

About the position

The Grocery Department Manager at the Defense Commissary Agency is responsible for planning, directing, and supervising the operations of the grocery department within a commissary. This role involves managing staff, overseeing inventory and merchandising, and ensuring compliance with safety and operational standards. The position requires effective communication and interaction with vendors and customers, as well as the ability to manage various aspects of grocery operations, including ordering, receiving, and stocking products.

Responsibilities

• Supervising department employees, assigning work, and balancing workload.
• Ensuring ordering, receiving, stocking, pricing, selling, and subsistence supplies are properly maintained.
• Managing the Not-In-Stock (NIS) listing and working with appropriate personnel to correct deficiencies.
• Inspecting shelf merchandise for product deterioration, spoilage, or deficiency.
• Managing the merchandising operation for the store.
• Working with the commissary Quality Assurance Evaluator (QAE) on contractor performance.
• Enforcing all safety rules and regulations.

Requirements

• Must be a U.S. citizen or national.
• Must be able to obtain and maintain security clearance eligibility based on an appropriate background investigation.
• Must meet the physical requirements listed in the Qualifications section.
• One year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-8 grade level, or two and a half years of progressively higher graduate level education leading to such a degree, or a combination of specialized experience and education.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in retail food merchandising and retail food store management.
• Knowledge of retail procurement and distribution methods.
