About the position

The Grossing Technician II position at Quest Diagnostics involves performing surgical gross examinations of specimens while ensuring the highest standards of quality, safety, and integrity. This role is essential in laboratory operations, supporting patient needs and contributing to a collaborative work environment. The technician will work under supervision, handling both uncomplicated and more complex specimens, and will have opportunities for career advancement through training and development.

Responsibilities

  • Perform surgical gross examinations of small, uncomplicated specimens and some more complicated specimens under supervision.
  • Assure appropriate specimen accessioning and labeling.
  • Maintain the integrity of the specimen and patient identification.
  • Describe gross anatomic features of surgical specimens, ensuring all lesions, markings, and sutures are mentioned.
  • Gross moderate to high complex specimens under direct and indirect supervision as applicable to training and experience.
  • Handle a broader range of specimens with indirect supervision.
  • Oversee the performance of Grossing Technician I as needed.
  • Record measurements, weight, volume, and any abnormal findings.
  • Dissect surgical specimens and prepare tissues for histologic processing.
  • Complete specimen preparation on non-gynecological specimens after training.
  • Interact directly with pathologists regarding gross dissection activities.
  • Identify and correct problems affecting test performance or reporting of results.
  • Ensure compliance with safety, quality control, and quality assurance standards.
  • Maintain a clean and organized work area.

Requirements

  • Meets all requirements outlined in corporate Minimum Qualifications for Personnel Performing Tissue Gross Examinations SOP and 1988 CLIA CFR 493.1489.
  • Associates Degree or Bachelor's Degree in a relevant field.
  • Current state licensure, if applicable.

Nice-to-haves

  • 3 years of histology and/or grossing experience.
