About the position

The Grounds Maintenance Foreman position is a critical role within the City of Maitland's Public Works Department, responsible for overseeing and coordinating grounds maintenance activities. This position involves performing semi-skilled and skilled grounds maintenance work while providing leadership and quality control for the Grounds employees. The Foreman will direct the work of assigned crews, ensuring that maintenance standards are met and that all tasks are completed efficiently and safely. The role requires a hands-on approach, as the Foreman will work on-site, performing various grounds maintenance tasks, including mowing, landscape detailing, and other related duties. In addition to overseeing the daily operations, the Grounds Maintenance Foreman will be responsible for training employees in standard operating procedures and equipment use, inspecting work in progress, and ensuring compliance with safety standards. The Foreman will also be involved in scheduling daily work, assigning tasks, and coordinating the completion of projects. This position is considered an emergency/disaster role, meaning that the Foreman must be prepared to respond to emergency situations, such as hurricanes, and perform emergency services as needed. The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills, the ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing, and a working knowledge of grounds maintenance practices. The Foreman will also be expected to maintain a positive work environment that respects and values diversity, encouraging the development of skills among team members from various backgrounds. This role may also involve assisting with the hiring process and providing recommendations on applicant selection.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee efficiency, production, safety, and work habits of division staff.
  • Train employees in standard operating procedures and equipment use.
  • Inspect work in progress and upon completion for compliance with safety and standards.
  • Instruct employees in the proper standard operating procedures and proper use of all equipment, machines, and tools.
  • Perform all levels of grounds work either alone or as a leader of a team.
  • Provide on-site coordination of work for groundskeepers and workers using verbal and written instructions.
  • Ensure the quality of grounds work meets established guidelines by performing inspections and providing training.
  • Lay out daily work schedules and assign tasks to individuals or crews.
  • Assist with interviews and provide recommendations on applicant hiring.
  • Oversee and work with Crew Leaders on various grounds maintenance tasks.
  • Maintain availability for standby assignments and return to work under the City's call back procedures.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Four or more years of progressively responsible experience in landscape construction or grounds maintenance.
  • Supervisory experience is required.
  • Possess and maintain a valid Florida Commercial Driver's License (CDL) certification, Class B.
  • Must obtain National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS-700 within 30 days of employment and ICS-100 and ICS-200 within 90 days.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in turf/plant maintenance and ability to read blueprints and interpret landscape plans.
  • Proficient in the use of backhoes, tractors, graders, and other heavy equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose plant and turf problems and read chemical labels.
