About the position

The Grounds Maintenance Worker 2 position at Oregon State University (OSU) is responsible for providing skilled landscape and grounds maintenance support for approximately 75 acres of University Housing and Dining Services properties. This role ensures that the grounds are presentable and safe for students, staff, and the general public. The position involves working closely with the UHDS Operations Landscape Supervisor to design, install, repair, and troubleshoot irrigation systems, as well as maintaining and repairing equipment. The worker will also have lead responsibilities, including training and supervising student and seasonal employees.

Responsibilities

  • Mow and edge lawns and fields using push and riding lawnmowers, tractors, and power edgers.
  • Plant, transplant, fertilize, and water lawns, shrubs, bedding plants, ground cover, and trees.
  • Cut, trim, and prune trees, shrubs, bedding plants, and ground cover.
  • Eradicate and prevent weeds using manual and mechanical methods.
  • Calibrate, mix, and apply pesticides and herbicides according to manufacturer's instructions.
  • Perform ice and snow removal during inclement weather.
  • Ensure gutters and roofs are free of debris.
  • Maintain cleanliness of grounds hardscapes, landscapes, and trash containment areas.
  • Pressure wash hardscapes and other structures to ensure cleanliness.
  • Assist with landscape and irrigation design and repair.

Requirements

  • Pesticide applicator's license may be required based on position duties.
  • Two years experience as a grounds keeper which included plant care; OR an Associate's degree in Landscape Technology or Horticulture; OR completion of a Landscape Certification program or license in a horticultural specialty.
  • Ability to acquire pesticide applicator's license within the first 90 days.
  • Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity and creating an inclusive working environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience as landscape foreman or crew lead within the landscape industry.
  • Experience in irrigation design, installation, and repair within the landscape industry.
  • Experience reading blueprints of irrigation systems and creating new irrigation plans in CAD or a similar program.
  • Experience designing and installing pavers, as well as paver wall construction.
  • Previous or current experience working within a university environment.
  • ISA Certified arborist.
