About the position

The Grounds Operations Specialist at North Dakota State University is responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled and unskilled manual tasks related to grounds maintenance. This role involves operating various types of equipment and vehicles, supervising seasonal and part-time employees, and ensuring the upkeep of the university's facilities. The position requires a hands-on approach to tasks such as snow removal, turf management, and general support for the Facilities Management department.

Responsibilities

  • Operate mowers, dump trucks, skid steers, loaders, forklifts, and other light and heavy equipment.
  • Perform semi-skilled work such as loading and unloading materials using powered equipment.
  • Conduct unskilled manual work including the use of hand tools, pesticide and fertilizer applicators, snow blowers, and lawn mowers.
  • Supervise and train seasonal and part-time employees.
  • Perform unskilled labor duties as needed, including snow removal and solid waste removal.
  • Support turf grass management and other areas within Facilities Management.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or GED.
  • One year of related work experience using equipment and vehicles such as single axle trucks, loaders, and tractors.
  • One year of related work experience in maintaining and repairing equipment.
  • One year of related work experience in grounds maintenance.
  • North Dakota Pesticide Application Certification - Ground Core, Ornamental/Turf obtained within 6 months of hiring.
  • Valid Driver's License.

Nice-to-haves

  • North Dakota Class 'B' Driver's License with air brake endorsement or equivalent upon hire.
  • One year of supervisory responsibility for three or more employees or two years of grounds maintenance experience.
