About the position

The Grounds Worker I position at Chabot College involves performing routine grounds maintenance and repair duties under general supervision. The role focuses on maintaining landscaped areas, athletic fields, and operating various power grounds equipment. This entry-level position is designed for individuals who are beginning their careers in grounds maintenance, with less independent discretion compared to higher-level classifications.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in landscape maintenance duties including watering, mowing, weeding, trimming, edging, renovating, and fertilizing lawns.
  • Plant, water, and maintain landscaped areas consisting of bushes, trees, flowers, and shrubs; re-seed, plant, and maintain new grass and plants; trim and prune bushes, trees, and shrubs.
  • Rake leaves and clear debris from walks, fields, courts, parking lots, and other open areas; load, remove, and dispose of trimmings and cuttings; pick-up trash; empty trash receptacles.
  • Prepare, maintain, and paint athletic fields for sporting events.
  • Operate a variety of heavy equipment and maintenance equipment such as tractors, front-loaders, parking lot sweepers, trucks, large mowers, and power tools.
  • Operate a garbage truck to transport rubbish to the local landfill.
  • Dig ditches, holes, and trenches.
  • Perform asphalt repairs and small concrete forming and pouring jobs.
  • Assist in the maintenance and repair of the District's irrigation system as assigned.
  • Safely apply herbicides, fungicides, and pesticides according to established rules and procedures.
  • Perform preventative maintenance to vehicles, equipment, and tools; make minor adjustments and repairs; report the need for major repairs and maintenance.
  • Utilize proper safety precautions related to all work performed.

Requirements

  • Formal or informal education or training that ensures the ability to read and write at a level necessary for successful job performance.
  • One year of grounds maintenance experience.
  • Possession of an appropriate, valid driver's license.
