About the position

The Groundskeeper/Mechanic I position is designed for individuals who take pride in maintaining the cleanliness and functionality of hospital facilities and grounds. This role involves a variety of tasks including general maintenance, light construction, and groundskeeping, contributing to a safe and welcoming environment for patients, staff, and visitors. The position requires hands-on skills and a proactive attitude, reporting directly to the Facilities Director.

Responsibilities

• Perform basic maintenance tasks such as changing light bulbs, fixing leaks, and repairing doors, windows, and other fixtures.
• Assist in preventive maintenance for mechanical systems like HVAC units, plumbing, and electrical systems under supervision.
• Ensure that hospital areas are clean, functional, and safe by addressing minor repairs as needed.
• Address minor carpentry work such as repairing shelves, painting, and patching walls.
• Clean and organize storage rooms, maintenance areas, and other utility spaces.
• Perform basic plumbing tasks such as unclogging drains, fixing leaks, and maintaining restrooms.
• Mow, trim, and edge lawns, keeping hospital grounds neat and presentable.
• Plant, water, and care for flowers, shrubs, and trees, ensuring the landscaping is attractive and well-kept.
• Remove debris, fallen leaves, and trash from outdoor areas to maintain a clean and safe environment.
• Handle seasonal tasks such as raking leaves, removing snow, and maintaining flower beds during various seasons.
• Maintain and repair basic irrigation systems to ensure proper watering of lawns and landscaping.
• Report any safety hazards or major repair needs to the supervisor or facilities management team.
• Respond to emergency maintenance requests such as plumbing leaks or grounds-related hazards.
• Monitor and maintain inventory of maintenance tools, supplies, and materials.

Requirements

• Basic understanding of repairs in plumbing, carpentry, electrical systems, and general facility upkeep.
• Familiarity with lawn care, landscaping tools, and seasonal outdoor maintenance.
• Prior experience in general maintenance and groundskeeping is preferred but not required.
• Ability to work well with hospital staff, follow directions, and report issues clearly.
• Capable of lifting heavy equipment, working in outdoor conditions, and performing physical tasks for extended periods.
