About the position

Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) is seeking a Group Leader (Accounting Manager 4) for the Payroll and Benefits Accounting Group within the Controller Division. This leadership role involves overseeing payroll operations for over 15,000 employees, ensuring compliance with various regulations, and driving process improvements. The Group Leader will collaborate with multiple departments to enhance payroll and benefits functions, manage a team, and present findings to senior management.

Responsibilities

• Oversee the daily operations of the Payroll and Benefits Accounting Group.
• Manage the processing of biweekly multi-state payroll for over 15,000 employees and weekly payroll for more than 1,400 union employees.
• Ensure payroll is processed accurately and timely in a fast-paced environment.
• Interact with all levels of staff and management to build strong relationships.
• Provide strategic solutions and process improvements, including automation of processes.
• Ensure compliance with internal policies, collective bargaining agreements, and federal, state, and local laws.
• Collaborate with HR, Accounting & Financial Reporting, Finance, IT, and Laboratory leadership.
• Support compliance and audit requirements, presenting findings to senior management.
• Develop, interpret, and apply financial policies and procedures.

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or a related field from an accredited institution.
• 8 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Demonstrated leadership in payroll management, including compliance and policy implementation.
• Extensive experience managing a complex payroll function in a large organization.
• Comprehensive knowledge of complex accounting and financial analysis, benefits, and tax accounting.
• Strong knowledge of IRS regulations and year-end payroll reporting requirements.

• Certified Payroll Professional (CPP)
• Experience working with Oracle, including Oracle Time & Labor (OTL)
