About the position

The Group Underwriter, Sr at Elevance Health plays a crucial role in determining the acceptability of insurance risks and setting appropriate premium rates for large, complex renewal and prospect employer groups. This position operates under the Corporate Underwriting Guidelines and Authority Limits, ensuring that all underwriting decisions align with the company's standards and practices. The role requires a deep understanding of various factors that influence insurance rates, including the group's experience, industry, location, size, and demographic nature. In this position, the underwriter will be responsible for calculating renewal rates for complex group cases, which involves thorough analysis and coordination with other departments to ensure the accuracy and consistency of account reporting. The underwriter will also propose rates and terms for group prospects, leveraging a combination of other carrier experiences, demographic data, and manual rates. Additionally, the role includes preparing or supervising the preparation of annual settlements, ERISA reports, and rate projections, as well as communicating with sales, administration, and claims to assess the rating and administrative impact of benefit and plan changes. The Group Underwriter, Sr is expected to work in a hybrid environment, requiring in-person attendance at an Elevance Health location at least once per week, with specific expectations discussed during the hiring process. This flexibility allows for both remote work and opportunities for in-person collaboration, fostering a connected workforce.

Responsibilities

  • Calculates renewal rates for complex group cases based on thorough analysis of the group's experience, industry, location, size, and demographic nature.
  • Coordinates with other departments to ensure the accuracy and consistency of account reporting.
  • Proposes rates and terms for group prospects, utilizing a combination of other carrier experience, demographic data and manual rates.
  • Prepares or supervises the preparation of annual settlements, ERISA reports, rate projections, or benefit change increments or decrements.
  • Communicates with sales, administration and claims to assess the rating and administrative impact or benefit and plan changes.

Requirements

  • Requires a BA/BS in a related field.
  • Minimum 4 years of related experience, or any combination of education and experience that would provide an equivalent background.
  • CPCU, CLU, LOMA, HIAA or other insurance related courses preferred.
