About the position

The Strength and Conditioning Coach is responsible for establishing and maintaining a strength and conditioning program, with three major goals of improving athletic performance, reducing athletic injuries, and teaching lifelong fitness and movement skills, for our Jr. Sharks athletes. The Strength and Conditioning Coach devises training plans according to sound scientific principles, supervises training sessions, evaluates athletes, and teaches strength and conditioning classes as needed. The Strength and Conditioning Coach meets regularly with sport coaches to determine what the athletes need to work on. The Strength and Conditioning Coach is responsible for maintaining the strength and conditioning facility.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure that the physical performance of San Jose Jr Sharks players is maximized through safe and effective training methods.
  • Be prompt and on time for assignment.
  • Meet and exceed customer expectation; workouts should be fun, engaging, and organized.
  • Keep players active and engaged by varying exercise movements and degree of difficulty.
  • Ensure all players receive equal amount of instruction.
  • Supervise all players and team coaches during gym sessions.
  • Keep open communication with team coaches and players regarding progress.
  • Develop social skills.
  • Promote Sharks Ice camps and clinics to keep players and parents informed of additional on-ice sessions.
  • Encourage new enrollment and promote re-enrollment.
  • Promote Pro Shop.
  • Follow all rink rules, policies, and procedures.
  • Know emergency procedures for equipment and evacuation of building.
  • Design and implement strength training and conditioning programs in-season, off-season, and pre-season for all Jr. Sharks teams.
  • Facilitate a collaborative relationship among sport coaches, sports medicine, and the strength and conditioning staff.

Requirements

  • Working toward a BS in Kinesiology or related field.
  • A current relevant professional certification credentialed by an independent accreditation agency, for example, the NSCA Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist (CSCS) certification.
  • Current standard first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and automated external defibrillation (AED) certifications.
  • A strong working knowledge and teaching skills in analysis and techniques of strength training.
  • Experience and/or expertise in strength and conditioning programming.
  • Strong motivational abilities.
  • Evidence of ability to interact positively with student athletes, colleagues, and the public.
  • Evidence of strong organizational skills and effective oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to demonstrate the appropriate skills and techniques to be used by the athletes.
  • Ability to visually monitor athletes.
  • Ability to perform physical demands such as sitting, standing, lifting and carrying (up to 50 pounds), reaching, squatting, climbing stairs, kneeling, and moving equipment/boxes up to 50 lbs.
