About the position

Des Moines Public Schools is seeking Building Guest Educators for our hard to fill schools for the 2024-2025 School Year. The selected candidates will be responsible for implementing Board Policy regarding education philosophy and curriculum under the direction of the administration. This role involves planning, organizing, managing, and interacting with students to establish rapport with students, staff, parents, and the community. Successful candidates will need to commit to working a minimum of 4 days per week and will be expected to maintain a positive educational environment while supervising students in various settings, including the playground, cafeteria, and hallways. The Building Guest Educators will plan instructional objectives and activities consistent with curriculum guides, direct and supervise learning activities, and implement disciplinary procedures of the District. They will also keep accurate records of attendance and absences, utilize a variety of analytical and evaluative techniques suitable to the curriculum content, and communicate positively to support students in their educational development. The role requires remaining current with developments in subject matter and teaching methodology, as well as assuming responsibility for periodic conferences with parents. Additional duties may be assigned by the appropriate administrator as needed. This position is temporary and offers a pay rate starting at $225 per day, along with 2 personal days as an additional benefit. Responsibilities

  • Plans instructional objectives and activities consistent with curriculum guides.
  • Directs and supervises learning activities.
  • Implements the disciplinary procedures of the District.
  • Supervises behavior in the school environment to maintain the safety and wellbeing of the students and staff.
  • Keeps accurate records of attendance and absences.
  • Utilizes a variety of analytical and evaluative techniques suitable to the curriculum content.
  • Communicates a positive support of the students in their educational development.
  • Supervises playground, cafeteria, and halls on a scheduled basis.
  • Relates with staff, parents, and community through positive professional cooperation.
  • Remains current with developments and contemporary interpretations of subject matter and teaching methodology consistent with the professional assignment.
  • Assumes responsibility periodically for conferences with parents.
  • Performs other duties within the scope of employment and certification as assigned by the appropriate administrator.
  • Issues grade reports on a periodic basis.

Requirements

  • Valid Iowa Teaching License
  • Substitute Authorization Certificate
